Steve Becker.

I help veterans land well in civilian life.

U.S. Navy veteran in Oklahoma. I also speak to VA and business audiences about leadership, decisions, and the transition nobody trains you for.

For veterans

Ask me. I'll give you a straight answer.

I made the jump from uniform to civilian work myself, and I've spent years since helping other veterans make it too. If you've got a question about the transition or the VA, send it my way. I'll give you a straight answer, or I'll tell you who has one.

  • Making the jump

Your first civilian role, and putting what you did in uniform into words a hiring manager understands.

  • Making sense of the VA

Plain-English education on how the system works and where to go next.

  • Building after the uniform

Running a veteran-owned business alongside a full-time career, and what I've learned the hard way.

I teach and point the way. I don't prepare or file VA claims. If you need claims help, I'll point you to an accredited representative.

Speaking

Told the way I'd tell it at the kitchen table.

Keynotes and workshops for VA and veteran audiences, and for business teams.

  1. Veteran transition and workforce events

For VSOs, transition programs, and employers who hire veterans.

  2. Leadership teams and off-sites

Operational excellence and decision frameworks for leaders.

  3. Conference keynotes

Decision-making and execution for business and industry audiences.

My story

The title and the hammer.

  1. First

    U.S. Navy

Where I learned that systems only work when people trust each other.

  2. Late twenties

    IT consultancy

    Co-founded in my late twenties.

  3. After 9/11

    Framing houses

Left the firm and framed houses. Different tools, same lesson: build it straight.

  4. Today

    IT leadership

About thirty years in, now at Dell Technologies.

The hammer taught me that you can't talk your way past a crooked wall.

I've been the guy in the room with the title and the guy swinging a hammer for a paycheck. Both taught me something.

Simplicity beats complexity.

Integrity beats speed.

I believe long-term leverage beats short-term excitement, too. I'd rather own a mistake out loud than pretend it didn't happen. Looking back, that habit has saved me more than any credential.

Family before business

They come first, and always will.

I measure success by whether I made a difference in the lives of my family. Work is how I support them, and I'm grateful for it, but they come first and always will. The ventures are good work. They aren't the reason I do it.

When priorities fight each other, I settle it the same way every time.

  1. Faith
  2. Knowledge
  3. Family
  4. Health
  5. Time
  6. Money
